The most common actuator used in robotics is a motor. If you looked inside a motor, you’d find magnets. Some of these magnets are permanent—they stay magnetic. Some of the magnets are electromagnets—these are turned on and off using electricity.

The armature, which is the part of the motor that turns, has a shaft, a long rod. The armature is covered in wires. When electricity flows through the wires, the armature becomes magnetic and is pushed and pulled by the permanent magnets around the armature. This movement causes the armature and shaft to spin.

Whegs are another way robots move around their environment. To create whegs, scientists at Case Western Reserve University studied how cockroaches move! Take a look at this website.
